Lewis comes top but where is Firefly?

PR Week has published its Top 50 Tech Consultancies league table.

Lewis made number one with Write Image coming in second place.

The usual suspects are missing because of Sarbanes-Oxley. So, interestingly, are Firefly and Spark Communications.

PR Week explains in its covering article that "many tech specialists do not feature as they were busy with pitches around the entry deadline."

There was a time when no excuse would have been good enough for not appearing in the league table. Perhaps this is a sign that it has lost credibility and usefulness? More on that in a separate post...

"The usual suspects are missing because of Sarbanes-Oxley..."

What???!?!? What difference does that make? That sounds like the most tenuous excuse making ever. So many companies hide behind SOX when really it has no impact on the area of the business cited.

"Because of Sarbanes-Oxley" in no way can or could explain whatever reason these companies were not on the list.

You might as well has said they weren't on the list "because the dog ate their homework" or go for something even more tenuous, "they weren't on the list because of the London Olympic bid" - either would be as relevant.

Thanks for your post. SOX is the reason that most of the major global communications and advertising groups cite for not entering league tables.

...exactly, but they're full of the proverbial. There is absolutely nothing in SOX which would preclude entering league tables.

This is something which should be nipped in the bud. SOX is increasingly being used as an excuse.

"Can we have budget to do this...?"
"Sorry, SOX says no."
"Can you sign off these expenses."
"Sorry, SOX says no"

What they mean is they can't be arsed and now they have a excuse which forunately would require lengthy reading of complicated regulatory documentation to disprove, so people go away thinking "tsk, that SOX is a pain in the arse, but what can I do if their hands are tied!"

Who used this excuse?
